In order to find the relation, the movie â€Å"The Freedom Writers† was studied. This film portrays the achievement of dreams, and how people living in the same place can express their language in different ways depending on their social and cultural history. We will write a custom essay sample on Written task or any similar topic only for you Order Now The task was centered on how language is shaped by a cultural context, represented with a diary entry written from a character from the movie: Ben. He talks about his and his classmates’ experiences with Miss Erin as a teacher and how her life changed together with their own, and how social differences interfere in their social relationship. This diary is separated into different sections according to what he lives every day, talking in present tense. Along the diary there are quotes from the teacher and the students, used to emphasize the main theme of this task: language and culture. Through those quotes the teacher showed code switching, trying to get to know her students by their own language. Ben tells his story his personal point of view and sometimes he compares the teacher’s story to his own. Nowadays this is a big problem for some people who go to different countries and still don’t adapt. That’s why this was a good exercise for better understanding of the problem (cultural/social) and practice better writing. A diary entry was chosen for this task because it is interesting how the point of view from a certain character can change the way a general audience can think about a certain topic. The characteristics of the airy entries were to add different dates to each paragraph and write in first person. *Written task based on the movie â€Å"The Freedom Writers†- directed by Richard Laggardness- year 2007 Rationale words: 300 How my story begins to change Monday 1 2: This is my first diary entry, so I will talk a little about myself. I lived all my life in Los Angles, California. One day I had to move to Long Beach, California for family reasons. In Los Angles my teachers were very serious, formal and not so appealing with students. For some reason everyone thought we were educated, but the real taxation is that teachers mistreated us. Once I moved to Long beach everyone was different from me, not in the educational part, but in the physical and language aspect; I was white and everyone else black, I talk in a certain tone and they talk in a different one. They discriminated me for those differences and I wasn’t able to defend myself, so instead I stayed quiet and ignorant. Suddenly my story began to change when Miss Erin arrived to school. I always saw something good about her; she wasn’t like the other teachers; she seems educated, DOD looking and she was white. I didn’t feel alone anymore around my classmates: someone was Just like me in the physical aspect. However, at the beginning I saw a strange attitude from her towards the class; she didn’t understand us very well. I didn’t know why, she did not look racist, but with time I was able to realize she didn’t understand the way my classmates talked. I say â€Å"my classmates† because I do not feel I belong to them, not now. Tuesday 19th: Today, Miss Erin had chalk on her skirt and one of the boys of the class told her: do you want give me fries with that shake†. Everybody laughed very hard, she laughed a little so nobody notice she didn’t understand the Joke, I knew she didn’t understand what he meant by that phrase, because that used to happen to me too, in fact I still don’t get them but I am used to those strange phrases. I realized that the misunderstanding was mutual, she didn’t understand them and they didn’t understand her since she used very professional words like: auxiliary, abrogate, acrimony etc. Nevertheless, she tried so hard to understand the class’ engage and be part of them but her culture was too different from theirs, however I was able to realize something; she didn’t want to learn the language Just to be updated, but because she cared about us and our education. Miss Campbell told Miss Erin we had to learn real discipline but how could she teach us discipline if she couldn’t communicate verbally with us? Wednesday 20th: Today at class, Miss Erin started to imitate the way they talked, she told us: â€Å"My badness† when she tried to be nice with us, as a consequence everyone started laughing because it was mispronounced. Also she got mad sometimes with one of my classmates, so she had to punish him verbally in a way that he could understand her, by saying: â€Å"This is a buck you’ to me and everyone in your class†. Either for worse or better she tried to communicate. I thought she was very brave to learn their language and face them in bad moments, it was certainly something that I would never do, I am too fearful. Friday 22nd: On this day Miss Erin told us she realized that the bad pronunciation and spelling mistakes came from their bad attitude, since they didn’t care about their own education. She notices that they express that attitude through drawings (that I never was able to understand) it was like their language was expressed in a simple drawing. She saw one of the drawings my classmates did; it was a comic mocking one black boy of the class. That was the moment when Miss Erin explained to us the story of the holocaust; nobody in my class knew what it was, neither did l. She told us that this event of the past was related to discrimination Just like the type they were doing to this boy. She explained how important education was for us, the opportunity it eave us to; go to school, college, work etc. She sounded really sad and mad at the same time, because we were losing a chance that many people throw away. I felt happy in a certain way because finally there was a teacher who cared about us in a deeper way. Right after that, she gave us some diaries where we could write, not only to write our feelings but also to improve our grammar. At the beginning, of course, nobody wanted to write because they weren’t used to express their feelings and writing their daily life on a piece of paper. Personally, I was scared for someone to e my life, get to know my fears and use that evidence to mock me. Nevertheless, one girl in my class took the first diary, which leads to the rest of the class to pick one too. Monday 24th: Miss Erin, arrived to school with a big surprise; everyone started to write in their diaries, it was awesome how they started to care about their grammar and their attitude was instantly changed, they were happier, their grades began to rise; it seems like writing took away all their problems. I can talk by myself to; I’m not afraid anymore of my classmates and our cultural differences, in fact, now I have friends. However, Miss Erin still doesn’t get the language; one day one boy told her: â€Å"No that don’t fly ‘ma†. And she told him â€Å"I’m not your mom†. Of course everyone laughed, including me, but not mocking, instead, they told her that was a sign of respect. Now that two years have passed from the first time we saw Miss Erin, she has learned our language and we all make Jokes between each other. All this effort came from her, that’s why I have to thank her for teaching us to be better persons with the rest of the people and most important, with ourselves. Love Is Not All Essays - Rhyme, Sonnet, Poetry, Sonnet 73, Sonnet 29

Love Is Not All Poets must utilize many tools and techniques to create a mood or convey a thought. Metaphor, simile, spacing, form, voice, and setting are all common poetic utilities. Some tools, however, are more understated. Some of the more delicate methods used by poets are rhythm, language, and the consistency of the theme throughout the poem. One work that makes use of inconsistent theme is Edna St. Vincent Millay's sonnet "Love Is Not All: It Is Not Meat nor Drink" (page 936). This poem uses indirect theme and abrupt change in message to add more emphasis the meaning of the poem. By beginning the poem with an image that contrasts the main theme, the poet is able to inflict a more vivid impression on the reader. Even the title of Millay's sonnet gives us an idea of what the poem's theme is likely to be. "Love is not all" suggests that the persona is decrying love. It prepares the reader for a put-down of love and all things romantic. Millay proceeds to use a group of anti-similes that declare what love is not; "it is not meat nor drink," therefor we presumably can not live without it. Love will not refresh you or protect you from the elements, as it is not "slumber nor a roof against the rain." She then relates love to "a floating spar to men that sink," stating that it will not support you in times of disaster. The entire first six lines generally knock love by declaring it useless and unsubstantial. After reading this the reader jumps to the conclusion that they know what Millay's message is. The turning point of the poem is the seventh line. "Yet many a man is making friends with death / Even as I speak, for lack of love alone" contradicts everything the reader is led to believe thus far. The following lines are equally contrary to the initial message. They state that though love may not be absolutely necessary, life is hardly worth living without it. The persona states that though in a time of "nagging by want past resolution's power" she could trade her lover's affection for a moment of relief, she doubts that she would. This change of message is one of the more delicate and indirect tools used to drive a point home to the reader. If we simply read the last sestet of the poem, the message seems trivial and mundane. The persona wouldn't trade her love for anything. So what. It has no emphasis, and lacks voice. The reader is left with no lasting impression. However, when read with the first octet included, the poem takes on a new importance. The sudden contrast in mood and theme catches the reader's attention. Contrast is used in all forms of art and imagery. Visual artists use contrasting colors and light and dark to make an image more independent and defined. When held to a dark backdrop, a white object appears much more vivid than it would against a light backdrop. A soft melody proceeding a loud crescendo is often used by musicians to make the latter even more impressive and overwhelming. Millay's use of contrast in this poem punctuates the message in a similar manner. The last line jumps upon the reader with emphasis. To create this emphasis, she employs inconsistent line structure and rhyme scheme in addition to the theme change. Throughout the sonnet, the lines are long and full of many-syllable words. The final line, however, is very simple. It contains single syllable words, and uses no figurative language. "It well may be. I do not think I would" simply states the message. The prolific use of figurative speech earlier in the sonnet to state the opposing thought makes this line more memorable and powerful. This line does not fit into the rhyme scheme of the sonnet, either. Lines one through twelve follow the standard scheme of abab. Lines thirteen and fourteen, however, don't rhyme. Millay breaks away from the rest of the poem, giving the last lines independence. These techniques combine with the change in message to embed the theme deep into the reader's mind. Contrast is a very effective tool in poetry. Just as clever metaphor and innuendo catch the reader's attention and emphasize a point more authoritatively than simple statement; contrast leaves a thought with a reader long after they have read the poem. Millay utilizes several forms of contrast in "Love Is Not All," the result being a poem that expresses distinctly that love is

Deregulation of Utilities in California essays

Deregulation of Utilities in California essays In 1996, the California Legislature unanimously approved legislation to deregulate electricity. The legislation promised competition and at least 20% lower electricity rates by 2002. Today, however, many agree that the deregulation of California was a disaster. There are disagreements on whom or what is to blame for the current situation and how to solve the problems. There are some who blame the utility companies for the deregulations current situation. Harvey Wasserman believes that the problems were started due to the mismanagement and greed of the corporations. The roots of this unnatural disaster lie in the corporate boardrooms of the utility companies now on the brink of bankruptcy. It was their mismanagement and greed that led directly to some of the greatest miscalculations in the US business history. (Wasserman 11) He points out that the utility companies had once made their own bad investments in obsolete generators, mainly nuclear power plants. (Wasserman 11) According to Wasserman, the utility companies were Tired of having their rates regulated by the states ninety-year old Public Utility Commission. What they wanted was to cash out of those bad investments, keep their big customers and make profits at will, without regulation. (Wasserman 11) Some of the alleged miscalculations of the companies were their haste to cash out and their assumption that there would always be a surplus of cheap wholesale electricity. (Wasserman 11) The companies then began to sell off much of their generating capacity and had too little of their own supply at a time when rates were still frozen. (Wasserman 11) There are some who disagree and blame the Governor and legislature of California for the problem. They say that the Sacramento Municipal Utility District should have been the model followed to help deregulate the utilities. Sacramento had ...

Imbue

Imbue Imbue Imbue By Maeve Maddox The old word imbue seems to be taking on new meanings. First let’s look at the only definitions currently given in the OED: imbue (transitive verb) 1. To saturate, wet thoroughly (with moisture); to dye, tinge, impregnate (with color or some physical quality).   2. To impregnate, permeate, pervade, or inspire (with opinions, feelings, habits, etc.). Merriam-Webster concurs: imbue (transitive verb) 1.   to tinge or dye deeply 2. to cause to become penetrated: impregnate, permeate Here are some examples of traditional usage: [Robert] Schuman’s desire to imbue his musical works with the character of literary texts. [Ian Fleming] implemented a strict schedule for his writing [and] meticulously researched facts to imbue his works with realism. helping out with the family businessimbued her with the entrepreneurial spirit The ruling classes and the intellectual elites in the emerging Haitian state remain imbued with French culture.   [When Pickwick is jailed] the lighthearted atmosphere of the novel changes, and the reader is given intimations of the gloom and sympathy with which Dickens was to imbue his later works. The audience got a taste of how  literature imbues  the world with infinite possibilities. Notice that in each example, the verb imbue is used with the preposition with: imbue his musical works with character of literary texts imbue his works with realism imbued her with the entrepreneurial spirit remain imbued with French culture with which to imbue his later works imbues the world with infinite possibilities Because imbue tends to be a literary word, I was surprised to see it used with the preposition to in this sentence on a literary site: Certain writers in the modern day and age use archaic terms such as thy, thee, and wherefore to imbue a Shakespearean mood to their work. I’ve also encountered nonstandard usage of imbue in other contexts: this post is me, taking my own advicein an effort to reveal qualities which I endeavor to imbue in future illustrations. Sadly, many people only know indoor plants for their decorative value and are largely unaware of the many benefits they imbue to those who share their spaces. The first writer seems to be using imbue in the sense of instill; the second, with the sense of impart. A piece of fabric may be imbued with dye. A child may be imbued with feelings, beliefs, and habits of mind. The image is that of a liquid being poured over something that soaks it up. So why are some speakers beginning â€Å"imbue things to†? One possibility could be the new use of imbue as gaming jargon:   Ã‚  How to make an imbue Weapon Imbues and WoD Switching the imbue on your offhand weapon In this context, the noun â€Å"imbue† refers to something added to a weapon to permeate it with certain powers. Falcon Computer Company Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Falcon Computer Company - Essay Example The higher management was great in formulating the values to be followed by the employees but only formulation was not the very success of it. The prime influencing factor is in appropriately propagating the values and the support of the management to exercise in practice. â€Å"Attention to detail is our trademark; our goal is to do it right the first time†. However it was observed that the design flaws caused the main hurdle and in the first place it needed to be corrected to prevent flaws in the forthcoming steps. Employees were pressurized to rush for getting the product out to the customers without putting a check on the quality. Employees were afraid of their immediate manager which would result in insult and embarrassment. The employees did not feel safe to stand up to the problems they were facing. The culture statement promising to encourage open, direct, person-to-person communication as part of the daily routine was not at all followed in practice. At Flacon it was more of secrecy than openness. Even after the value document was formulated and was expected to be followed, lack of management enforcement was greatly lacking to get the values embedded into the employees. If the formulators are themselves lack the will t support the values and make sure they create examples so that there is an evidence of its usage in the proper context, the employees cannot be expected to envelope anything from it. It will stay in the books only. Lack of interest from the employee side was a turnaround feature in exercising the values. They did not take it seriously and never bothered to come up with valuable suggestions so as to prove that there was an initiative from their side. They have never held the management accountable for the non-compliance of values. They instead have understood what was really emphasized in the organization namely hierarchy, secrecy and expediency. They never moved out of their comfort zone to take a stand. The lack of initiative also made the other employees to follow the similar notion to take a back seat.  Ã‚

Scubadiving in India

Scubadiving in India Lifes biggest adventure is to explore the unknown and discover the undiscovered destination on this planet. Adventure lovers set out into the wild and face the challenges as they come. More than half of the earth is covered in water and the life underneath the sea is still undiscovered and unexplored. The adventure seekers that love water also adore the sport of scuba diving. The pleasures of floating in the deep blue seas or the thrill of diving under the ocean are unparallel joys. Scuba Diving is a start of discovering a whole new world of the underwater. Even in the history there have been cases where man has shown curiosity about the life existing in the sea. A very famous Indian epic Ramayan has a mention of the same. There are several imaginary creatures which are inspired by the creatures residing inside the sea. Scuba diving for that matter comes from Europeans who basically were taken in by the long coastline of India and the white sandy beaches. Snorkelling too is a great sport which is another discovery of the whites. The Indians too have started discovering the thrill associated with these water sports.   The Indian coastlines spread over more than a thousand kilometres. The Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal all surround India from three different directions. Hence it is not surprising to know that the country is made up of some of the most beautiful beaches of the world. The other more alluring things about the Indian coastlines and beaches is the mangroves, backwater, cliff peninsulas, Cluster of islands and the highlight- the marine life. There are several diving sites open to the tourists and several still remain unexplored.   The waves hitting the rocks and the splashing of the same on the coral reefs is one of the most stunning and exciting experience. The waters in the lagoons wash away the white sands with the water splashing on the shores and are dotted with palm trees. This is purely a sight of untouched nature and the one which should not be missed. The underwater is very different than what one view on land. Everything filters through the blue colour of the sea. It is colourful and vibrant. It is untamed and variously structured forming patterns which are interesting to observe. Corals in the ocean are the most attractive part of an underwater dive. They are of many varieties, colours and shapes. There are thousands of them living right under the sea! They range from small hydroids to tall sea fans, from languidly waving sea anemones to jellyfish. India has gained popularity as a scuba-diving and snorkelling destination of the world. Being at Cadet College

Respected —– Worthy teachers and my dear friends AOA Today I have been given an opportunity to express my feelings being here in a cadet college. I would start with the few words by one of the cadet like us. He says: â€Å"At 90-years-old, you will still remember the experiences, the camaraderie, and the friendships that develop with perfect clarity. The knowledge gained about yourself, as well as about this career, is immeasurable. † I feel the same. Cadets is a program that has changed my life and opened up various doors for me.The way I react in situations has changed because of cadets. Cadets isn't just a program that keeps you busy a few nights during the week. It gives you opportunities to travel, meet new people, to become a better leader and most importantly a better version of yourself. My favorite part of Cadets is the people I've met along the way. Through national competitions, and other activities, I have met some of the most amazing people. These pe ople have made a huge impact on my life.Despite the fact that I may not see some of them anymore, the impression they left will always be there. I thank the cadet program for making all of that possible. The essentials of religion taught in the class room, religious education in the classroom supplemented by prayers in the College Mosque, observance of fast in the month of Ramadan and holding of functions on days of religious significance helps us to practice religion in the best way. Moreover, the Morning Assembly begins with the recitation of Verses from the Holy Quran followed by their explanation. To get up 4 in the morning, physical training, and taking classes from 8 to 1, preps, afternoon games, regular drill, mess nights †¦. (aur bhi agar kuch huwa). and finally lights out at 10. This seemed to be so tough in the beginning. I used to think that I won’t be able to survive and did not consider it important to get up early and go to bed on time. But now that I have s urvived, I admit that this is the best life a student or a person can lead. Within a month or two I realized a great change in my physical health. This tough, well disciplined life has helped me get sound mind and body. And I am looking forward and excited about the activities in future like horse riding and swimming. Every day is a new experience, new lesson, new adventure. I can never forget the lesson that Discipline, bravery, honesty and modesty are the four foundation pillars for all of us who will be passing out from this institute. I make sure to keep up these pillars not thorough the years in this college but throughout the life. I have so many people to thank for where I am today, because I believe every experience and every person influences who you become. But first of all, Allah Almighty and then I'd like to thank my parents who got me into Cadets. To this day, I don't think they know how much they have actually done for me. I'd like to thank all the hard working staff at our Cadet College for making sure that we all got the opportunities we deserved. Most of all I would like —— (any other person) And finally, I'd like to thank you all for having me here to speak with you today. You were a great audience and I wish you all the best. (Thank you or good afternoon. )

Analysis Of David Brooks s People Like Us - 874 Words

In the essay, People Like us by the author, David Brooks, the main focus is the diversity in America. The United states has a label as being a country that is very diverse. Our country has many different types of ethnic groups, religions, personalities, interest, etc. so in that case, you really can justify the United states as diverse. Brooks mostly uses logic in his essay to prove that, once you look at the United States with a more magnified view, you might realize that technicalities come into play and change the previous statement to, unfortunately, the complete opposite, a corrupt society with no diversity. Since our nation has such diverse qualities and characteristics, you would think that everyone who lives in such a country, we would all come and stick together. With people who are so different, in so many different types of ways, being a united and unified nation would be knowledgeable. But instead our country consists of people making strenuous efforts to group themselve s with people who are basically like themselves (Brooks 62). When taking a deeper look, and basically breaking down the nation piece by piece, we see segregation that happens to go unnoticed. There are neighborhoods that have a reputation for being where African Americans live, â€Å"Asians Live, Caucasians live, Mexicans live etc. which is not a good thing.
